Tourists Fined for Reckless Driving in Teide National Park

Reckless Tourists Caught on Camera in Teide National Park

Guardia Civil officers have successfully identified the drivers and occupants of two rental cars who were filmed committing a dangerous stunt on the TF-24 highway within Teide National Park. The shocking footage, which circulated widely on social media, showed passengers sitting on the car door windows with the upper half of their bodies completely outside the moving vehicles.

Investigation Leads to Multiple Fines

The investigation and subsequent location of these individuals culminated in charges against eight people for reckless driving and failing to use safety equipment within the protected national park. As detected in the viral video, the passengers were traveling without using seatbelts and were not in the proper seated position inside the vehicles.

In response to the video evidence, the Traffic Security Investigation Unit of the Canary Islands Traffic Sector launched a formal investigation. The operation involved officers from both the Granadilla de Abona Traffic Detachment and the Fiscal and Borders Section of Tenerife South Airport.

Tourists Intercepted Before Departure

Authorities eventually located both vehicles, their drivers, and occupants—all foreign tourists who were preparing to return to their home country. Once identified, officers formally notified them of the corresponding charges for reckless driving and failure to use necessary safety equipment.

Substantial Penalties Imposed

The incident has been reported to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. According to Spanish traffic regulations applicable to non-residents, the offenders faced substantial penalties: two fines of €500 each with six penalty points deducted, plus six additional fines of €200 each. This case serves as a stark reminder that traffic laws are strictly enforced in Spain’s natural treasures, even for visiting tourists.
