Maritime Adventures in Tenerife

Dolphin and Whale Watching Tours

Observing whales and dolphins in the wild, especially around the Los Gigantes cliffs or the western coast of Tenerife, is undoubtedly one of the greatest attractions for families visiting the island. In Puerto Colon port, located in Costa Adeje, there are many companies offering sea excursions, giving families a wide range of options tailored to their needs and expectations. Tour prices vary depending on their length and offered amenities, such as all-inclusive options or the possibility of swimming in the ocean.

A two-hour catamaran cruise on the azure waters of the ocean, during which we could observe pilot whales in their natural environment, was an amazing experience. Beautiful weather and calm seas made this day deeply memorable for us, offering unforgettable impressions for the whole family. Without a doubt, observing these majestic creatures in the wild is something that every family should experience in Tenerife with children, enjoying the closeness to nature and the extraordinary attractions that Tenerife has to offer.

The catamaran crew took care to provide us with the best possible observation conditions, informing us about the life and habits of these majestic mammals. Special attention was paid to maintaining silence in the presence of animals, so as not to disturb their natural rhythm of life, which was extremely important and educational for us.

Besides observation, the cruise also offered the opportunity to admire the picturesque landscapes of Tenerife from the ocean’s perspective. The return journey to Puerto Colón led along the western coast of the island, allowing us to see such gems as Playa La Caleta, Playa de la Enramada, Playa del Duque, Playa de Fañabé, Playa de Torviscas and Playa La Pinta Puerto Colón from afar. This experience was not only a pleasure but also a reminder of the beauty and fragility of nature of which we are a part.

Mount Teide – Spain’s Highest Peak

teide tenerife with kids (17)

During our family trip to Tenerife, one of our main goals was to reach the summit of Teide – the highest point in Spain and the highest place on the Atlantic islands. Our son, full of enthusiasm at the thought of climbing to the edge of an active volcano’s crater, realized his dream on a November day.

When planning a visit to Teide with children, it’s worth remembering a few key issues:

  • A car is the easiest way to get to the lower cable car station, although buses and tour coaches are also available.
  • The parking lot at the lower cable car station, located at an altitude of 2356 m, offers 220 free spaces.
  • The cable car operates daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, depending on the season, in good weather conditions.
  • Tickets are best purchased online.
  • For safety reasons, using the cable car is not recommended for pregnant women, children under 3 years old, and people with cardiac problems.
  • Without a special permit, two trekking routes from the upper cable car station are available.
  • To enter the summit of the Teide crater, a free, personalized permit is needed, which must be reserved in advance through the Teide National Park website.
  • It’s important to match the cable car departure time to the validity of the ticket and permit, and to ensure appropriate clothing, footwear, headwear, and a water supply.

A visit to Teide is an unforgettable adventure for the whole family, offering not only spectacular views but also a valuable lesson in geology and nature.
