A New Hope for the World’s Largest Telescope
A significant step has been taken towards building the largest telescope in the northern hemisphere in Spain. The promoters of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) have announced the start of negotiations with the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities to locate the revolutionary observatory in the Canary Islands.
Financial Lifeline for a Groundbreaking Project
The TMT International Observatory (TIO) consortium sees promise in the Spanish government’s “generous” offer of 400 million euros. This substantial financial commitment paves the way for negotiations to establish a new world-class observatory in Spain, specifically for the TMT project. After former US President Donald Trump withdrew funding for the telescope in June, the massive project—over a decade in development—had seemingly reached a dead end.
A Potential Turning Point
For this reason, the 400 million euros offered by Pedro Sánchez’s government represents a “potential opportunity” for the Consortium. They affirm that this could provide the final push needed to advance the long-stalled project, bringing one of the most ambitious astronomical endeavors of our time to the pristine skies of the Canary Islands.
