Major TF-1 Expansion Approved for Southern Tenerife
The Government of the Canary Islands has given its final approval for the construction of a third lane on the TF-1 highway between Oroteanda and Las Américas in the south of Tenerife. With an investment of €175.4 million and an execution period of 42 months, this major infrastructure project is set to transform one of the island’s most critical transport corridors, as announced by the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility.
Enhancing Traffic Flow and Safety
Driven by the General Directorate of Road Infrastructure, the project will increase the road’s capacity, improve traffic flow, and reinforce road safety on one of the busiest stretches of highway in the entire archipelago. The Oroteanda-Las Américas section is part of the larger third-lane project for the TF-1 between San Isidro and Las Américas. This intervention is considered a strategic response to the sustained growth of traffic in the south of the island and is crucial for improving connectivity between urban centers and major tourist hubs.
Project Scope and Key Improvements
The new lane will be developed from kilometre point 64+000, just after the Oroteanda link (in San Miguel de Abona), to point 73+760, beyond the Las Américas interchange (primarily in Arona, and to a lesser extent, Adeje). The project includes the construction of a third lane in each direction and the remodelling of the key interchanges at Parque de la Reina, Guaza, Los Cristianos, and Las Américas.
Furthermore, the plan includes an upgrade to the road leading to the Hospital del Sur (TF-28). It will be expanded into a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction, significantly improving direct access between the TF-1 highway and the hospital complex. The project, drafted by the joint venture UTE FHECOR Ingenieros Consultores S.A. and Trazas Ingeniería S.L., has successfully passed all required technical and environmental procedures.
