Tenerife Enters the Record Books with Sweet Success
The municipality of Santiago del Teide in Tenerife has claimed a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest turrón, a traditional Christmas sweet. The record-breaking confection measured an impressive 1,115.15 metres and was made yesterday in the main square of Puerto de Santiago, with official certification from Guinness World Records.
Official Certification and Community Effort
The official Guinness World Records judge, Anouk de Timary, validated the record after the turrón’s creation, measurement, and verification process met the organisation’s strict technical and hygiene requirements. The event was organised by Santiago del Teide Town Hall in collaboration with the Santiago del Teide Association of Business Owners and Traders (ASEMTEIDE), ACYRE Canarias, ACYRE Madrid, and with support from Turismo de Tenerife.
A Taste of Local Tradition
The record-setting turrón was crafted using locally sourced ingredients tied to Canarian pastry tradition: almonds, honey, gofio (toasted cereal flour), banana, and sugar. Coordination was led by chef Pablo Pastor and gastronomy professionals, alongside members of ACYRE Canarias and ACYRE Madrid, local producers, and qualified technical staff. From the early hours of the morning, hundreds of people participated in the various stages of the event, which combined gastronomy, cultural activities, and a local market, becoming a major public and collective endeavour.
Sweet Treat with a Social Heart
Beyond the record itself, the initiative had a significant social component. All of the turrón produced was donated to 20 social organisations within the municipality that work with vulnerable families. This ensured a responsible distribution plan with no food waste. Mayor Emilio Navarro stated, “The social aspect of this project is what has interested us most from the beginning. We want to ensure that no home in Tenerife goes without a piece of this typical Christmas sweet, made with our local products, during these holidays.” This approach reinforced the event’s community spirit and linked the gastronomic celebration to a tangible social impact.
Professional Rigour and Local Support
The involvement of ACYRE Canarias and ACYRE Madrid was key to guaranteeing the gastronomic rigour of the process, compliance with the technical standards required by Guinness World Records, and the promotion of traditional pastry-making from a professional perspective. For its part, ASEMTEIDE helped engage the municipality’s business and commercial sector, strengthening the local, community-focused nature of the event and its direct economic impact on the area.
