Tenerife faces radical weather shift from today
Tenerife is bracing for a radical change in weather starting today, Thursday, 11 December, due to the arrival of a DANA (Isolated High Altitude Depression). According to the latest forecast from meteorologist Jorge Rey, persistent rain, strong winds, significant rainfall accumulations, and even snow are expected over the weekend, particularly in higher altitude areas.
Severe episode forecast for the archipelago
Forecasts point to a more severe episode than is usual for this time of year, driven by Atlantic instability that will also affect mainland Spain. Jorge Rey states that the Canary Islands archipelago will be one of the areas worst hit by this new meteorological scenario. “Heavy rainfall is expected in the Canaries, especially due to the formation of this DANA which is heading there, a phenomenon that tends to intensify rain episodes in mountainous territories like Tenerife,” says the young forecaster.
Timeline of the incoming storm
The episode will begin to make itself felt from tomorrow, Friday, when a front from the Atlantic will increase cloud cover. Between Saturday and Sunday, the weather will deteriorate more evidently. Jorge Rey details that the evolution of the atmospheric system will be rapid, because “a DANA could form, leaving instability in its wake.”
Warnings issued and heightened island risks
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated yellow and orange warnings across all islands because this situation is expected to create genuinely dangerous conditions. The island’s orography, with its stark contrasts and mountain walls, will cause clouds to release precipitation more forcefully than on other islands.
Unsettled outlook for the rest of December
The meteorologist’s forecast does not end there, as his outlook for next week suggests a very unsettled second half of the month. Jorge Rey explains that “the arrival of some low pressures will produce more instability around the 13th and 14th,” which could prolong intervals of intermittent rain and a drop in temperatures.
