Tenerife Announces Major Repair Works for Key Santa Cruz Bridge

Tenerife to Undertake Major Bridge Rehabilitation on TF-4 Motorway

The Cabildo of Tenerife announced on Sunday that it will carry out rehabilitation and reinforcement works on a bridge located on the TF-4 motorway, at the southern entrance to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The bridge in question spans the Puerto de la Hondura, where defects have been detected.

Project Scope and Timeline

The project has a total budget of €1,032,111, including IGIC (Canary Islands General Indirect Tax), and an estimated execution period of five months from the awarding of the contract. Dámaso Arteaga, the Councillor for Highways of the Cabildo de Tenerife, explained that the action was prompted after a technical inspection visit identified various defects in the viaduct that require intervention for its proper maintenance and conservation.

“This is a project that will benefit citizens across the entire island, as it is one of the main access and exit routes to the capital, with high traffic volumes,” he added.

Detailed Nature of the Repair Works

Specifically, the works will involve the removal of deteriorated concrete and its replacement, as well as the passivation of oxidised steel and the reinstatement of the bridge’s steel reinforcement bars. Furthermore, they will include cleaning the surface exposed after the removal of the damaged concrete and applying bonding agents to strengthen the connection between the existing concrete and the new material to be used.

Additionally, drainage downpipes will be installed to prevent runoff water from flowing over the surfaces of the structural elements.
