Tenerife Shipyards’ Emergency Repair Saves Grain Cargo Ship

Emergency Repair Averts Crisis for Grain Carrier

Naval repair technicians from Tenerife Shipyards have carried out an emergency intervention on the cargo ship Helene Julie after its crew detected a critical failure in the steering gear, a key component for any vessel’s manoeuvrability and safety. The swift action allowed the ship, which is dedicated to the international transport of grain, to resume its route with a final destination of Douala, Cameroon, after halting operations in Tenerife’s waters for urgent repairs.

Critical Failure in Key Steering System

The Helene Julie, built in Japan, was forced to interrupt its voyage after a serious malfunction was detected in its steering system, severely compromising its ability to manoeuvre. Faced with this situation, the cargo ship docked in Tenerife’s bay, where a specialised team of naval engineers and hydraulic experts took on the repair of the steering gear. This component is fundamental for controlling the ship’s course, especially during port manoeuvres and navigation in adverse conditions.

Reinforcing Tenerife’s Strategic Maritime Role

Officials from Tenerife Shipyards emphasise that this type of operation reinforces the island’s role as a strategic enclave for naval repair in the Atlantic, capable of providing an immediate response to highly complex technical incidents. The vessel, which is 136.4 metres long and sails under the Dutch flag, has now left the island after successfully completing the repairs and preparing its logistics before setting a definitive course for the African coast.
