New Road Safety Measures for Tenerife in 2026
The year 2026 has begun with the introduction of the V16 beacon, which replaced traditional warning triangles on 1 January. However, this is not the only change that Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is implementing this year. The DGT is preparing a new emergency alert system set to change how drivers in Tenerife react to unforeseen incidents on the road.
Faster Emergency Response the Key Goal
The objective of traffic authorities is to improve road safety and reduce accident rates on Spanish roads. With this new measure, they aim to cut the response times of emergency services, namely ambulances, fire crews, and law enforcement. This system is designed to enhance road safety and facilitate the evacuation of the injured.
Creating an Emergency Corridor
A reform of the General Traffic Regulations will introduce a new obligation for drivers on dual carriageways and motorways. This involves the creation of an emergency corridor, achieved by vehicles moving over to the sides during a serious traffic hold-up—a practice already carried out in several European Union countries. This model seeks to speed up the arrival of emergency services at the scene of an accident.
How the New Alert System Will Work
The new emergency alert will involve implementing a system that provides advance warning of an approaching priority vehicle. Road users will receive this alert before the vehicle’s audible sirens or flashing lights are visible. From this year, “these centres will be able to share this information in real time with the DGT 3.0 platform, which will send the alert to vehicles circulating near the trouble spot on the road where there is an accident or any other type of incident,” explain sources from Traffic.
The 3.0 platform was created in 2017, and since then “the DGT has been working on connectivity services and real-time information for vehicles.” Furthermore, “currently, drivers receive warnings about accidents, traffic jams, or the location of vehicles stopped due to breakdowns, thanks to geolocated V-16 signals,” stated an official. The technology is ready for 2026, but “the cooperation of all administrations with emergency services will be necessary for them to feed that information into the platform.”
Essential Rules for Drivers
Stay Calm: If you are unsure which way to move, never make sudden movements that could surprise other drivers.
Reduce Speed: Decrease your speed gradually without harsh braking, always maintaining a safe distance.
Give Way: When necessary, yield by moving towards the side of the road where you are and never cutting across the path of the emergency vehicle.
Follow Instructions: Always follow the directions of traffic officers or emergency services personnel.
