Tenerife’s Major Investment in Las Vistas Beach Promenade

Major Investment for Las Vistas Beach Promenade

The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo de Tenerife) is set to invest €3,143,031 in the renovation of the Las Vistas Beach promenade in Los Cristianos, Arona. This significant project falls under the Island Programme for Tourism Strategy and Regeneration (PIER), as announced by the island’s government.

A Strategic Upgrade for a Tourism Hotspot

Lope Afonso, Vice-President and Councillor for Tourism, highlighted that the Council’s weekly government meeting has given initial approval to the basic and execution project. He described it as a “strategic action for the improvement of the coastal front and the most frequented tourist space in the south of the island.” The total estimated investment for the project is €5,530,820, with the Tenerife Council providing the majority of the funding.

Comprehensive Renovation Plans

The project entails a complete overhaul of the seafront promenade. As Afonso points out, the plans “contemplate the comprehensive renewal of the promenade, including pavements, urban furniture, landscaped gardens, and adapted access points.” The new design guarantees universal accessibility and aims to strengthen the unique landscape identity of the Los Cristianos coastline. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the overall tourist experience, improve the quality of public space, and boost the sustainability of the destination.

Enhancing the Visitor Experience

The primary goal of the Las Vistas Beach Promenade project is to renovate the most iconic walkway in the tourist hub of Los Cristianos. This will be achieved by reorganizing the layout to provide more width and create a more direct connection to the beach itself, making it easier and more enjoyable for visitors to access the golden sands.

Island-Wide Regeneration Strategy

Afonso explained that these types of projects are “designed to be comprehensive and to address unique spaces within the urban fabric of the municipalities.” The PIER is a key document for renewing the image and offerings of these island towns. “We are driving the regeneration of Tenerife’s tourist spaces,” he stated. The Tenerife Island Council definitively approved the PIER 2024-2027 on December 18, 2024, with an initial contribution of €18 million in investment, which includes eight major interventions.

Focus on High-Density Tourist Municipalities

Lope Afonso also noted that five municipalities are included in the PIER: Arona, Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz, Santiago del Teide, and San Miguel de Abona. These areas collectively account for 120,970 tourist beds, representing over 90% of the island’s accommodation and the highest density of tourist activity, which leads to greater wear and tear on public spaces. The Council is committed to improving the quality of these locations to maintain Tenerife’s status as an attractive tourist destination and to enhance the current condition of some of its environments.
