Tenerife Invests in Green Mobility with New EV Charging Stations
The Island Council of Tenerife’s Department of Natural Environment and Sustainability has allocated €421,094 to establish the first 16 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the island. The project is now open for public consultation for 20 working days following its publication in the Official Provincial Bulletin (BOP). These charging points will be distributed across 13 municipalities, marking a significant step toward sustainable transportation.
Where the New Charging Stations Will Be Located
The initial phase will see charging stations installed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Arona, and Adeje—each receiving two stations—while single stations will be placed in Candelaria, Tegueste, La Guancha, Garachico, Santiago del Teide, Guía de Isora, San Miguel de Abona, Santa Úrsula, Arico, and Granadilla de Abona. Estimated costs vary, ranging from €64,320 for a semi-fast station in Candelaria (Arguama Street, corner of Avenida Marítima) to €12,368 for a similar station in Guía de Isora (Avenida de los Océanos, corner of Calle Carrero, near Playa Alcalá).
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, two stations will be installed: one on the San Andrés highway (€21,628) and another on the extension of Ramón y Cajal Street (€22,061). The island’s major southern tourist hubs will also see expansions—Arona will get two semi-fast charging stations on Avenida Juan Carlos I (€17,844) and Rambla Dionisio González in Las Galletas (€16,141), while Adeje will receive stations on Avenida V Centenario de Las Américas (€18,429) and Avenida de Las Gaviotas in La Caleta (€18,905).
Supporting Sustainable Tourism and Reducing Emissions
Rosa Dávila, President of the Tenerife Island Council, emphasizes that this initiative aligns with global climate action policies, stating, “We’re building an island-wide public charging network to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” The project complements existing private stations and infrastructure like those at the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER). Blanca Pérez, the councilor for the department, highlights the push toward clean energy, noting, “These actions pave the way for eco-friendly driving and environmental respect.”
A Growing Network for Electric Mobility
Pedro Millán, the island director, points out that the Electric Vehicle Users Association (Auve) has championed sustainable mobility for over a decade. The new stations will offer semi-fast (22kW) and fast (50kW) charging, with smart technology integration for efficient network management. The goal is to ensure all EV and hybrid drivers can access reliable charging across Tenerife.
By the end of 2025 or early 2026, the island aims to have 38 operational charging stations, funded by €2.6 million from local and European sources. Half will serve tourist-heavy areas, with some featuring small canopies for convenience. This expansion is part of Tenerife’s broader commitment to sustainability and green tourism.
