Tenerife Doctors to Join National Strike Over Staffing Law

Tenerife doctors to stage four-day strike

The College of Physicians of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (COMTF) will join a national strike on 9, 10, 11 and 12 December. The industrial action has been called by the Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions in protest against the government’s draft bill for a Framework Statute for National Health System Staff.

Profession “undervalued” by proposed law

In a press release, the professional body stated that the draft document does not reflect “the responsibility or the level of preparation the profession demands.” Furthermore, they argue it “compromises the ability of the National Health System to attract and retain talent” within the medical profession.

Canarian crisis set to worsen

The situation in the Canary Islands is expected to be “aggravated” by the “acute” lack of professionals, driven by poor job stability, working conditions, and pay. “This situation encourages our specialists to feel compelled to migrate to other regions and countries that do value their training and dedication,” they added.

Key flaws in the draft statute

The Tenerife College of Physicians shares the “concern” of the Medical Profession Forum regarding the ministry’s proposed Framework Statute. They highlight persistent “serious shortcomings,” including an “inadequate” professional classification, the absence of “clear” regulation of working hours, and the lack of a pay model commensurate with the professional and social responsibility of the role.

“Without a robust regulatory framework that supports professional excellence, work-life balance and rest, the quality of care and patient safety, those hard-won rights are seriously threatened,” stated the professional body, which is encouraging all members to support the strike.

Strike rallies announced

The College has called for all its members to mobilise and participate in the strike, as well as in planned rallies. A gathering is scheduled for 9 December from 11:00 to 11:30 at the main entrance of the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC). A further demonstration will be held on 11 December from 11:00 to 12:00 at the Government Sub-Delegation office in the island’s capital, as well as at hospitals and other health centres.
