Tenerife Takes Over Management of Teide National Park

Teide National Park management officially transferred to Tenerife

The Canary Islands Government approved a decree on Tuesday formally transferring the functions of public administration for the management and conservation of Teide National Park to Tenerife’s Island Council (Cabildo de Tenerife). In a statement, the regional executive detailed that this move finalises the handover of the park’s day-to-day management.

A move for greater agility and local oversight

The decree reinforces the model of island-based management for this protected natural space, endowing it with greater agility and bringing oversight closer to the ground for Spain’s most visited protected area, all while guaranteeing its conservation. This decision concludes an administrative and regulatory process, consolidating within a single legal framework the transfer of powers that Tenerife’s council had already been exercising under a delegated arrangement.

Resources and properties included in the handover

The approved decree also regulates the personal, material, patrimonial, and economic resources attached to the transfer. It establishes that the Cabildo de Tenerife will have at its disposal the assets and rights necessary to exercise the transferred functions, as detailed in the decree’s annexes. Among the properties included is the Telesforo Bravo Administrative and Visitor Centre, the handover of which covers both administrative spaces and the exhibition area and auditorium.

Legal framework and retained powers

The transfer is consistent with the provisions of Law 5/2024, the 2025 Budget of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, which states that from 1 January 2025, the functions for the management and conservation of Teide National Park fall to the Island Council of Tenerife. Nevertheless, the Canary Islands Government retains powers relating to the formulation and approval of the Park’s Master Plan for Use and Management, as well as legislative and regulatory development and liaison with UNESCO to preserve the Teide’s World Heritage status.
