Tenerife Commits €24 Million to Santa Cruz Port Transformation
The Government Council of the Cabildo de Tenerife agreed today to contribute €24 million towards a convention for remodelling the link dock in the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The agreement is shared with the Canary Islands Government, Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, and the Port Authority. Of the convention’s total €80 million budget, 40% will be provided by the Canary Islands Government, 30% by the Cabildo de Tenerife, 20% by the City Council, and 10% by the Port Authority, as announced by the Cabildo’s Second Vice President, José Miguel Ruano, in a press conference.
The project, which will be signed shortly and remain in effect for four years, includes the creation of commercial and restaurant spaces, pedestrian walkways, and a new ferry and cruise terminal centred around the link dock.
On-Demand Transport Service Expands Across the Island
The Second Vice President also outlined other agreements from the Council meeting, including putting out to tender the expansion of the on-demand transport service to twelve new municipalities: Los Silos, El Tanque, Garachico, Tacoronte, El Sauzal, La Matanza, Santa Úrsula, La Victoria, Güímar, Arafo, La Guancha and San Juan de la Rambla. This service, which began experimentally in Fasnia, Arico and Güímar and has been used by 20,000 people, helps residents access the island’s two main transport corridors, the TF-1 and TF-5 motorways.
Multi-Million Euro Support for Housing and Vulnerable Residents
The Cabildo’s First Vice President, Lope Afonso, reported that the Government Council has approved the rules for a grant scheme aimed at distributing essential goods to vulnerable people, with a budget of just over two million euros. He highlighted that this amount has increased from the €1.7 million allocated at the start of the current administration’s term.
A separate grant scheme of €200,000 was approved for projects supporting children and adolescents at risk of or experiencing social exclusion. Afonso also noted a budget modification of nearly €1.8 million for the construction of 21 publicly protected homes in the municipality of La Victoria, under a collaboration agreement with the Canary Islands Housing Institute (Icavi). With this development, 193 homes across five municipalities have now been put out to tender, out of 257 included in the agreement with Icavi.
Employment, Tourism and Further Investments Agreed
Regarding employment, the Council agreed to apply for a €2.4 million grant from the Canary Islands Employment Service to promote training and job placement for young people who have not obtained their compulsory secondary education (ESO) certificate. A grant line was also approved to help local councils hire young university graduates and those with intermediate and higher-level vocational training (FP).
Ruano reported that the Council approved its public job offer for 2025, comprising 176 positions, of which 78 are for open competition and 98 for internal promotion. Another agreement was the funding of a new Tourist Information Office in the municipality of Adeje, at a cost of €516,000, to be split evenly between the Cabildo and the Town Council.
The Council also approved the rules for a €260,000 grant scheme for clubs, sports federations, and individual athletes to finance travel to official national and international competitions. A modification to the remodelling project for the Plaza de la Patrona in Candelaria was agreed, involving approximately €14,500 for wastewater channelling within a total project budget of €19 million.
Finally, it was decided to extend the gender equality strategy until December 2026, as it was due to expire on 31 December this year. This is with a view to developing the third strategic framework for gender equality throughout the coming year.
