Tenerife Honored as a Premier Running Destination

Tenerife Earns Prestigious Active Running Cities Award

In a significant national first, the Island Council of Tenerife has been honored with the Active Running Cities award from the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation. The recognition was presented at the ExpoDeca 2025 fair to Yolanda Moliné, the Council’s Sports Minister, by Marcos Moreno, head of the Active Running Cities project. This distinction makes Tenerife the first supra-municipal territory in Spain to receive this accolade, celebrating regions that champion running and walking through safe, accessible infrastructure, supportive policies, and high-quality events.

A Commitment to Active Lifestyles

Yolanda Moliné expressed great pride in receiving the award at Expodeca, stating it “confirms our commitment to active living in general and to running in particular, always hand-in-hand with the island’s town councils.” She elaborated on the Council’s vision, noting that the Sports Department is dedicated to promoting sports and active mobility. “We are implementing measures knowing they benefit all citizens by transforming our urban environments into more active, healthy, sustainable, and inclusive spaces,” Moliné affirmed.

A Strategic Tool for Future Development

The Active Running Cities project is more than an award; it’s a catalyst for progress. Moliné explained that the initiative “not only aligns with several pillars of our strategic sports plan but also serves as a necessary tool for improving our services.” It will provide a framework for continuing programs related to infrastructure and public works planned for the coming years, all aimed at encouraging physical activity and sport in all its forms. This encompasses everything from programs and services for athletics, running, and walking, to the dedicated infrastructure and spaces needed to support them.

Broad Benefits for Island Life and Tourism

This federated standard is set to reinforce the multidimensional impact of sports on the sustainable development of the island. Its scope is designed to involve the vast majority of the population, regardless of their personal fitness goals or condition. Furthermore, it positions Tenerife to launch new, integrated policies related to health, physical exercise, sport, and tourism. By leveraging the powerful connection between sport, health, and community well-being, Tenerife is enhancing its appeal as a destination that values and facilitates an active lifestyle for everyone.
