Major investment for tourist area regeneration
The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo) is investing €18 million in 2026 for the regeneration of tourist spaces across the island. Key projects include the Paseo de las Vistas in Arona, the Puerto Colón seafront in Adeje, and Aceviño street in Puerto de la Cruz. These initiatives are part of the Island Tourism Regeneration Programme (PIER) 2024-2027, which is being developed in Arona, Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz, Santiago del Teide and San Miguel de Abona. These municipalities concentrate 120,970 tourist beds, corresponding to over 90% of the island’s total accommodation and its highest tourist density.
A strategy based on sustainability
The island’s vice-president and councillor for Tourism, Lope Afonso, has proposed strengthening the programme in next year’s budget, aiming to consolidate a commitment to regenerative tourism and advance towards a more competitive model better connected with the local territory. The Island Tourism Regeneration Programme is a key document for renewing the image and offering of the five beneficiary municipalities because, according to Afonso, “we seek to establish a strategy based on sustainability, balancing environmental, economic and social aspects.” The goal is to add value to the destination, contributing to generating greater tourist spending.
“We intend for this investment to have a knock-on effect on the private sector, incentivising improvements to both accommodation and the destination’s complementary offerings,” assured the councillor. He maintains that “it is a commitment of the Cabildo to improve the quality of places that sustain the tourist destination and make it attractive.”
Parallel works on beaches and coastal areas
In parallel, the ‘Tenerife and the Sea’ programme will carry out a set of 20 actions in 2026 at locations such as Las Caletillas beach in Candelaria and the car parks at Punta de Teno in Buenavista del Norte, among others. The list of works to be undertaken includes removing beach access barriers, eliminating obsolete facilities and improving public-use equipment, creating new green spaces, restoring the maritime-terrestrial public domain, and protecting elements of landscape interest.
Towards a more connected tourism model
The Cabildo de Tenerife is working with the purpose of advancing towards a tourism model more connected with the territory. To this end, it promotes cooperation with the primary sector, commerce, culture and sport, fostering new experiences that generate a more balanced economic impact across the entire island. “Our objective is to strengthen island-wide economic cohesion and consolidate tourism’s role as an engine for employment and progress,” stated Lope Afonso, the area councillor, while reviewing the past year and presenting the challenges for 2026 at the traditional Christmas meeting with associated businesses.
€45 million budget to strengthen the economic engine
The Tourism department will manage a budget of €45 million next year aimed at “strengthening the island’s main economic engine, promoting more balanced tourism, and consolidating a model based on sustainability, quality and diversification.” Afonso highlighted that this budget “reinforces our determination to advance towards a destination of excellence, where the quality of the tourist experience goes hand in hand with the protection of the environment and the wellbeing of those who live on the island.”
In this sense, Lope Afonso underlined that Tenerife “must continue to lead tourism innovation, committing to projects that increase added value and generate opportunities for all citizens.” Afonso and Dimple Melwani, the CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, highlighted the unity and strength of the sector at the recent business event held in the Parque Marítimo of Santa Cruz. The councillor also recently outlined the keys to Tenerife’s success at the Forbes Travel Summit 2025.
