Major Funding Boost for Tegueste’s Cultural Hub
The Príncipe Felipe Cultural Centre in Tegueste, home to the well-known Teatro Príncipe Felipe, is to receive an additional €235,000 for improvements. The funding increase was approved by Tenerife’s Cabildo (Island Council) Department of Culture and Museums for the facility, a key cultural centre for the municipality included in the 2016-2029 Cultural Infrastructure Plan.
Investment in Accessibility and Safety
Of the total sum, €211,356 comes from the island council with €23,484 contributed by Tegueste Town Council, as detailed by the island’s vice president, Lope Afonso. The conservative politician stated that the need for extra funding addresses new requirements identified in the building, “which make it essential to continue improving the accessibility, safety, and functionality of a cultural space key to the social and cultural life of Tegueste.”
Specifically, the funds will enable an accessibility and adaptation project, including installing an accessible ramp, adapting toilets for people with reduced mobility, and restructuring the entrance to the Municipal Library. Furthermore, the fire safety installations at the Príncipe Felipe Theatre will be reformed and upgraded, “thereby reinforcing the building’s safety and compliance with current regulations.”
Meeting Modern Standards
“This is not a new project, but rather an expansion of the already approved intervention, adapting it to current needs and guaranteeing that the cultural centre meets the standards of accessibility, comfort, and safety demanded by the public,” added Afonso.
For his part, the Mayor of Tegueste, Norberto Padilla, welcomed the move. The nationalist politician clarified that the project was originally requested during the 2015-2019 municipal term. It consists of enabling and providing better accessibility to the building, reforming existing toilets to adapt them for people with reduced mobility, and creating a new entrance for the public library, which is located on the second floor. “This is necessary funding for which we are enormously grateful to the Cabildo,” he emphasised.
Commitment to Cultural Infrastructure
Lope Afonso recalled that the fundamental objectives of the Cultural Infrastructure Plan are the rehabilitation and improvement of the island’s cultural facilities, adapting buildings to current legal requirements, and increasing their social and cultural utility. “With this budget increase, we reaffirm the Cabildo’s commitment to the municipalities and to an accessible, safe, and high-quality culture for everyone,” he added.
The work will be executed in accordance with the Plan’s regulatory rules. The Cabildo noted in a statement that the maximum deadline for completing the work for the 2025 annual allocation is 10 September this year, with a justification deadline of 10 November. It added that progress continues “in modernising the island’s cultural infrastructure, promoting more inclusive spaces better prepared to respond to the present and future cultural needs of the population.”
