Storm Francis moves on from the Canaries
Storm Francis continues its path towards mainland Spain, leaving its final unsettled conditions over the islands. In fact, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) deactivated the yellow warning for coastal phenomena across all islands at 3am this morning, Sunday, 4 January, except for Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where it was lifted a few hours later. This was the only warning that remained in force.
Tenerife forecast: Cloudy with possible frost
On the island of Tenerife, a slight drop in maximum temperatures is expected for this Sunday, ranging between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius, with frost not ruled out at the high altitudes of Mount Teide. Cloudy skies will predominate in the north of the island, with moderate rainfall more frequent in mid-altitude areas where some persistence is possible. In other areas, there will be cloudy intervals with a low probability of occasional weak showers, increasing to cloudy on the southeastern slope in the afternoon when rain becomes more likely.
Northwesterly winds will be strong at intervals on the southwestern slope, with locally very strong gusts not ruled out. In the central peaks, strong northwesterly winds with probable locally very strong gusts are expected, easing during the second half of the day.
Forecast for La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro
The Aemet forecast for the other western islands, as reported by EFE, is as follows:
La Gomera: Cloudy skies will predominate in the north and west, where weak and occasional showers are likely. Cloudy intervals elsewhere, with some weak and occasional showers not ruled out. Temperatures with little change. Moderate northwesterly wind with periods of strong wind in the early hours on the southwestern slope, where a locally very strong gust is possible. Forecast temperatures for San Sebastián de La Gomera: lows of 16°C, highs of 21°C.
La Palma: Cloudy skies will predominate in the north and west, where weak to moderate showers are expected, more frequent in the mid-altitude areas of the northwest where some persistence cannot be entirely ruled out. Cloudy intervals elsewhere with probable weak and occasional showers. Temperatures with little change. Moderate northwesterly wind with periods of strong wind in the early hours on peaks, northeastern slopes, and southwestern-facing areas, with a low probability of locally very strong gusts. Forecast temperatures for Santa Cruz de La Palma: lows of 16°C, highs of 22°C.
El Hierro: Cloudy skies will predominate in the north and west, where occasional weak to moderate showers are likely. Cloudy intervals elsewhere, without ruling out some weak and occasional showers. Temperatures with little change. Moderate northwesterly wind with periods of strong wind in the early hours in high areas, where a locally very strong gust is possible. Forecast temperatures for Valverde: lows of 12°C, highs of 15°C.
