Storm Disrupts Weekend Plans Across the Island
The arrival of Storm Emilia in the Canary Islands is set to bring strong winds, heavy rain, powerful waves, and even snow on the highest peaks. This situation has placed the entire archipelago on alert for various meteorological phenomena, forcing the suspension or postponement of scheduled events and, above all, outdoor activities. To keep the public informed, local councils are disseminating details of cancelled events through their official channels. Here are some of the acts cancelled this weekend on the island of Tenerife.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, several public spaces will remain closed on Saturday. These include the Parque de la Granja, Parque Don Quijote, and Parque Las Indias. Due to the swell alert, Los Charcos de Valleseco and El Bloque will also be closed, as waves there could exceed four metres, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Furthermore, the inauguration of the Gastro Navidad Market Fest, which was due to take place on Saturday, has been cancelled. Consequently, the scheduled performances by artists including Leoni Torres, Andru B, Yosu Laroca, and Rafa Rodríguez will not go ahead. The organisers have stated they will return “as soon as it is safe for everyone.”
La Laguna Activates Emergency Plan
The La Laguna council has activated its Municipal Emergency Centre (CECOPAL) due to the storm’s arrival. It has therefore announced the postponement of all municipal outdoor activity for the duration of the active alerts. Specifically, public facilities have been closed and all municipal events organised or authorised by the local council—whether leisure, extracurricular, sports, cultural, or similar—are suspended until further notice, especially those held outdoors or involving public gatherings.
Sports and cultural facilities (public libraries, theatres, etc.), municipal parks, community centres, and senior centres will also be closed. As a precaution, the Cruz del Carmen car park in the Anaga region, as well as natural pools and coastal areas, are closed. The Department of Social Welfare has postponed the Volunteer Market scheduled for this weekend in the Plaza del Cristo, along with all activities planned in senior centres, nurseries, day services for minors, and the Anchieta Disability Centre. Additionally, emergency accommodation resources have been prepared as a preventive measure.
