Major Housing Agreement for Tenerife’s Capital
The Government of the Canary Islands, the Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo), and Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council have agreed to sign a deal for the construction of nearly 300 public homes for social rent in the island’s capital. The total estimated investment is €41.7 million. According to a statement released by the regional government on Thursday, the formal agreement will be signed at an event in the coming weeks.
Location and Management of the New Homes
The deal will enable the development of two public housing projects: 37 homes in the María Jiménez neighbourhood and 226 in the Cuevas Blancas area. Once completed, the properties will be added to the public housing stock managed by the Canary Islands Housing Institute (Instituto Canario de la Vivienda), under the coordination of Antonio Ortega. The institute will be responsible for their management and allocation in accordance with current regulations.
Funding and Administrative Roles
The agreement, framed within the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025, aims to boost the public rental offer and meet existing housing demand in Santa Cruz. The city council, through its public company Viviendas, Proyectos y Obras Municipales de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, S.A., will undertake the promotion and execution of the works, as well as providing the land and covering infrastructure costs. Upon completion, the homes will be transferred to the Canary Islands Housing Institute. The Tenerife Island Council will participate in financing the project, helping to guarantee the viability of this large-scale development and strengthening cooperation between the different authorities.
Allocation and Quality Standards
The regional government specified that all homes built under this agreement will be classified as publicly promoted protected housing and will be destined for social rent on a permanent basis. Allocation will follow current rules and will be aimed at family or cohabitation units with limited economic resources, guaranteeing the homes are used as a primary and permanent residence. The developments will adhere to the technical standards established for protected housing, meeting quality, functionality, and efficiency benchmarks with the goal of providing dignified and sustainable long-term housing solutions.
