House Fire in Santa Lucía Highlights Need for New Fire Station

Emergency services mobilised for Santa Lucía house fire

Emergency services were called into action on the afternoon of 3rd January 2026 after a fire broke out in a house in the town centre of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Gran Canaria. The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (Cecoes) received the alert at 14:23 regarding a blaze at a property on Juan del Río Ayala street.

Neighbours step in during lengthy fire service response

Due to the distance between the Arinaga fire station and Santa Lucía town centre, firefighters from Bomberos de Gran Canaria took approximately 40 minutes to reach the incident—the standard travel time from the Arinaga Industrial Estate to the municipality. In the interim, several neighbours attempted to contain the spread of the flames using makeshift means, such as buckets of water, working on the façade of the affected property until the professional services arrived.

Extensive damage and psychological support provided

Upon arrival, firefighters extinguished the fire inside the home and carried out ventilation, sealing-off, and cordoning operations. They also assisted the owners in recovering basic necessities, such as clothing and personal items, needed for the days following the incident. The operation also involved officers from the Local Police and Guardia Civil, as well as an ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), which treated the homeowner for an anxiety attack.

Emergency services provided psychological support to those affected and conducted an assessment of neighbouring houses to rule out structural damage or additional risks. The property was severely damaged, particularly on its ground floor. Fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, preventing more serious personal consequences. Firefighters conducted two thorough searches to confirm no one was trapped.

Fire service renews call for long-delayed Tunte station

Bomberos de Gran Canaria has emphasised that this event highlights the urgent need to open the Tunte fire station—a facility completed in 1999 that has never become operational because the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has not joined the Emergency Consortium. Bringing this station into service would provide immediate coverage for the town centres of both San Bartolomé de Tirajana-Tunte and Santa Lucía, as well as the summit area, significantly improving emergency response times and increasing public safety.
