Historic 17th-Century Painting Saved in Tenerife Rescue

Fire Service Evacuation Paved Way for Restoration

The Cabildo de Tenerife has completed the restoration of several Assets of Cultural Interest from the Hacienda de Las Palmas de Anaga. Among them is a 17th-century oil painting of the Virgen de Candelaria, which was evacuated by firefighters in 2024. The piece would not have survived another winter due to the severe deterioration caused by damp.

Complex Rescue from Isolated Location

The restoration work was made possible by a prior evacuation operation carried out in July 2024 by the Tenerife Fire Consortium. They moved the artworks from an isolated enclave with no vehicle access, under conditions of extreme orographic difficulty, while guaranteeing the integrity of the pieces at all times. The restorations have cost €30,000, funded by the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Canary Islands Government, as announced by the island corporation this Saturday.

Donation Enables Heritage Recovery

Previously, the Cabildo de Tenerife approved in a government council the acceptance of the donation of several artistic and religious pieces linked to the Hacienda de Las Palmas de Anaga by its owner, Candelaria de Fátima Camejo Gallardo. This transfer has allowed for the restoration, conservation, and enhancement of a heritage collection of great importance to the island.

Reclaiming Artistic and Devotional History

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, attended the presentation of the restored works today at the church in Taganana. She emphasised that “the restoration of the oil painting of the Virgen de Candelaria means recovering a work of enormous artistic and devotional value, closely linked to the history of Anaga and the island’s rural heritage.”
