Renewable Diesel Nexa Arrives in the Canary Islands
Repsol’s 100% renewable diesel, Nexa, is now available at fuel stations in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. By the end of September, the company plans to expand distribution to 46 service stations across the archipelago. Priced the same as the Diesel E Plus it replaces, Nexa offers an eco-friendly alternative without compromising affordability—though both fuels will remain available for now. What sets Nexa apart? It slashes CO2 emissions by up to 90% by eliminating petroleum entirely, using recycled cooking oil and agricultural waste as its primary ingredients.
A Leap Toward Circular Economy
This initiative aligns with circular economy principles, tackling waste accumulation while providing a sustainable fuel solution. “Nexa isn’t just another green alternative—it’s our most advanced diesel, with 100% renewable origins,” explains Estibaliz Pombo, Repsol’s head of energy products. After a year-long pilot in Fuerteventura, where Nexa was tested at three stations, Repsol is scaling up, adding 43 more locations across Tenerife (23) and Gran Canaria (20). Once fully deployed, Nexa will be available at 65% of Repsol’s 71 Canary Islands stations.
Investment and Expansion
Repsol has heavily invested in this hydrocarbon-free fuel, developed at its Cartagena plant before being shipped to the islands. The company, led by Josu Jon Imaz, plans to ramp up production further by incorporating its Puertollano facility (Ciudad Real) next year, aiming for an annual output of 200,000 tons. The goal? To supply 1,500 stations across Spain and Portugal by year’s end. “This is another step in our commitment to decarbonizing transport,” Repsol stated.
The Future of Sustainable Transport
Repsol is tackling emissions on two fronts: aviation and road transport. In aviation, the race is on to develop sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with the Canary Islands—home to eight busy airports—playing a strategic role. For road transport, electric vehicles alone won’t suffice, especially for heavy-duty trucks and buses, where battery limitations persist. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy, is another focus—though cost remains a hurdle. Nexa, however, has already cleared commercialization barriers, offering drivers a practical, affordable, and eco-conscious choice today.
