As more people shop online, parcels arrive via courier firms with labels containing the information needed for delivery. Once the package is opened, the box is often thrown straight into the bin. However, “At first glance it’s just a label, but for fraudsters it’s a treasure trove,” warns an officer from Spain’s National Police. This is the starting point for a scam known as ‘dumpster diving’.
How the ‘Dumpster Diving’ Scam Works
The fraud begins when victims throw the packaging from received parcels into the rubbish without removing the personal data visible on the labels. Criminals then retrieve this information and impersonate the retailer, the delivery company, or even a bank.
The scammers’ goal is to drain the victims’ bank accounts and use their personal details to commit further fraud. Cybercriminals use this technique of rummaging through rubbish to obtain valuable user information.

The most compromising information found on labels includes:
- Passwords
- Card numbers
- Banking information
- Email addresses
- Details about the victim’s bank
- Place of work
This is the most valuable data for fraudsters, as it allows them to access the victim’s confidential information, take control of their accounts to commit fraud, or steal their identity.

The authorities recommend never throwing packaging with legible personal information into the bin.
