Over 300 New Homes Approved in Los Realejos

Planning Permission Granted for Over 300 Homes

More than 300 homes, comprising both public housing and private developments, have now been granted the necessary planning licences in Los Realejos. This milestone follows months of streamlined processing by the Municipal Urban Planning Department, a process accelerated by the approval of the new General Urban Plan (Plan General de Ordenación or PGO), which will come into force on Tuesday 23 December.

Municipal Leaders Hail a Major Step Forward

The Councillor for Urban Planning, Noelia González, stated that both factors “have been fundamental in taking this important leap forward for new housing projects in Los Realejos.” The mayor, Adolfo González, highlighted “the interest shown by owners of developable land in moving ahead with new developments for private sale and public housing.”

He also drew attention to “the new possibilities that the General Urban Plan will open up for the creation of development units and urban projects.” Another positive aspect emphasised by the mayor is fostering local roots. According to Adolfo González, “What we are seeking is for people from Los Realejos who want to buy a home in their own town to be able to do so, and to not be forced to go and live in another municipality because there are no options to buy or rent in Los Realejos.”

Attracting Investment and Addressing Housing Challenges

The appeal to investors presented by the new municipal planning framework is seen as a catalyst for local development. “We have made it our mission to make all the machinery available to anyone who wants to invest here, to expand the residential offering and address a growing problem,” the mayor said, alluding to the serious difficulties in accessing housing “across the whole country and in the Canary Islands.”

Councillor Noelia González noted that since the approval of the General Urban Plan, “we are receiving more visits and holding conversations with landowners and developers who see an opportunity in our town to build residential buildings in various locations and neighbourhoods across the municipality.” She conveyed that this situation “is good news for expanding the supply and possibilities of living in Los Realejos, always under the planning criteria defined in the planning document.”

Commitment to Streamlined Planning and Strategic Growth

Mayor Adolfo González underscored the value of the work carried out. He highlighted “the intense and effective work being done by the Municipal Urban Planning Department, achieving greater agility in processing and legal certainty, thereby facilitating the management of licences for housing construction. This meets residential demand and attracts investment to the municipality, always based on meticulous land planning.”
