Netflix Hit “Bajo un Volcán” Filmed in Tenerife

Tenerife’s Volcanic Scenery Steals the Show on Netflix

Netflix’s catalog gets a fresh update every week, filled with new productions aiming to delight its subscribers. One such film that has captured global attention is “Bajo un Volcán” (Under a Volcano), which was shot across several natural locations on the island of Tenerife. The production made extensive use of the northern part of the island, with the town of Garachico and its surroundings providing the most emblematic landscapes for the movie. The unique Canarian volcanic terrain became an essential element of the story, helping to reinforce the plot and create a compelling atmosphere.

From Cinemas to Global Netflix Stardom

Following its theatrical release on June 20th, “Bajo un Volcán” attracted just over 30,000 viewers. However, its arrival on Netflix on October 10th changed everything. In less than a week, the film directed by Martín Cuervo broke into the platform’s global Top 10, becoming one of the most-watched movies of the moment. The story of Mario, a military pilot stationed in Tenerife amid the threat of a volcanic eruption, and Elena, a volcanologist determined to prevent disaster, has won over Netflix audiences worldwide. With this production, the Canary Islands solidifies its role as one of Spain’s premier cinematic backdrops.

Sequel Already in the Works

Buoyed by the success of “Bajo un Volcán,” Secuoya Studios has already begun work on a sequel, to be titled “Bajo un Fuego” (Under Fire). Actor William Levy will reprise his role as Mario Torres, picking up the story one year after the events of the first film. While the plot details are still under wraps, it has been revealed that the protagonist will have to face both a romantic breakup and a new catastrophe. The sequel also marks the film debut of Levy’s 15-year-old daughter, Kailey Levy, who will share the screen with her father.

Familiar Faces Return for the Next Chapter

Filming for the sequel is already underway, with several familiar faces from the original cast confirmed to return. Adriana Torrebejano, Claudia Álvarez, and Antón Lofer are among the names set to reprise their roles, ensuring continuity for fans of the first film.
