Solving Masca’s Traffic and Parking Challenges

Addressing Masca’s Mobility Challenges

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) confirms what many visitors and residents already know: the road collapse and parking situation in Masca represent one of the most serious mobility problems in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte. The plan describes the iconic hamlet as “one of the most saturated areas, where its limited parking supply tends to fill up quickly due to the high influx of tourists.”

Proposed Solutions for a Tourist Hotspot

The master document recommends improving parking management and vehicle rotation in Masca. For this emblematic village, the plan also proposes temporary, low-cost improvements including installing handrails, benches, tactile paving, and adding fresh paint and vegetation in deteriorated areas to enhance pedestrian accessibility. The primary goal is to reclaim space for pedestrians and reduce vehicular traffic in this Buenavista settlement.

From Quick Fixes to Permanent Changes

Following these initial measures, the plan envisions executing permanent works that would expand sidewalks and implement accessible paving. However, a significant challenge remains: the TF-436 road leading to Masca is not under island jurisdiction, which means the Buenavista del Norte City Council cannot undertake direct actions on this roadway.
