Masca: A Magical Corner Overwhelmed by Mass Tourism
Masca is one of the most enchanting spots in Tenerife, yet it has also become one of the most overcrowded places in the entire Canary Islands. Often dubbed the Spanish Machu Picchu, this natural enclave is one of the island’s top visitor attractions, despite its roads and parking facilities being wholly inadequate for such numbers. The situation has deteriorated to the point where the asphalt has been turned into an impromptu boxing ring, as seen in a video that has gone viral on social media.
Road Rage Incident Captured on Camera
The footage shows two tourists trading blows on the roadway after leaving their cars parked in the middle of the narrow mountain pass. Following the scuffle, and with numerous vehicles backed up in a queue, a volley of insults is exchanged. This single video encapsulates the myriad problems plaguing Masca: overwhelming visitor numbers, more cars than the mobility infrastructure can handle, and the inevitable flare-ups of tension that occur when driving in an unfamiliar and hazardous environment.
