A Family Patisserie in a Historic Setting
Cafés are thriving as people seek out tranquil spots to enjoy a good breakfast or afternoon snack, allowing them to disconnect from the hectic pace of daily life. In February 2016 on the island of Tenerife, one such establishment opened its doors with the idea of offering customers a different experience. This is Makika&Co, a family-run patisserie and cafe that has become a must-visit in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, thanks to its exquisite French delicacies made in its own on-site bakery.
An Award-Winning Canarian Courtyard Oasis
Within the walls of an ancient 18th-century house lies a lush Canarian courtyard, an inviting space to unwind and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere while savouring pastries in the purest French style. Makika&Co was chosen among the best specialist coffee establishments in Spain at The Best Coffee Shops 2024 awards, presented at the II Coffee Shop Congress held in Madrid. The quality of its coffee, its carefully crafted French pastries made daily, and its cosy atmosphere and gastronomic experience for all customers are particularly praised.
From Breakfast to Artisan Cakes
Makika&Co offers the chance to start the day with its breakfasts, available until 13:00, and continue at lunchtime with a selection of two types of salad, three starters, and three main courses, designed for those who want to enjoy a light, homemade meal with a seal of quality. Throughout the day, the bakery maintains its French essence with a wide variety of artisan pastries and cakes, plus its payés (pastries) stuffed with cheese, quiches in different flavours, sandwiches, and toasted sandwiches. The creations can be personalised by adding extra ingredients for a supplementary charge that varies depending on the addition.
The establishment also offers home-delivery breakfasts with three different menus, priced between €20 and €25, available for delivery only on the island of Tenerife. Artisan cakes can be ordered for celebrations, requiring 48 hours’ notice and collection exclusively from the shop. At Christmas, you can opt to try their irresistible roscones de reyes (King’s cake). Furthermore, those interested can sign up for the workshops they offer throughout the year.
Star Bakes and a Homage to Canarian Flavours
French patisserie is the star offering at Makika&Co, but it’s not the only thing that captivates visitors. One of the most requested creations by customers is its popular toast “La Canaria”, a homage to local products and traditional flavours of the archipelago. Made on sourdough bread, it combines chorizo from Teror, smoked Canarian cheese, a touch of guarapo (palm syrup) from La Palma, and a light sprinkling of gofio (toasted grain flour). This combination of ingredients pays tribute to island gastronomy.
Practical Information and Opening Hours
The establishment is located at Calle San Juan, 15, in the heart of the historic centre of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. It has a rating of 4.4 stars on Google, a clear reflection of its customers’ satisfaction. Makika&Co is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 8:00 to 20:00, with uninterrupted hours and service on a first-come, first-served basis. It remains closed on Sundays and Mondays for staff rest.
