Lopesan Costa Meloneras: A Leader in Accessible Hospitality
Disability rights auditor and activist Tanzila Khan has recognized Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa as a benchmark for accessibility in the Canary Islands. Her comprehensive evaluation, conducted with support from Triple Impact Hospitality, highlights the resort’s exceptional commitment to inclusive design and service. The audit particularly commended the staff’s proactive approach in creating a welcoming environment for guests with mobility, visual, auditory, and neurodiverse needs.
An Immersive Accessibility Audit
Khan and her team stayed at the resort for five nights to thoroughly assess its accessibility features. Many returning guests with mobility challenges confirmed the hotel’s reputation for excellent service. “I enjoyed my accessible room, the pools, spa, and delicious buffet breakfast,” Khan reported, noting she felt “as if barriers had disappeared” during her stay.
Exceptional Accessibility Features
The audit praised the resort’s spacious lobby, easily navigable for wheelchair users, featuring a lowered reception counter for independent check-in and accessible elevators. The Deluxe Adapted rooms received top marks for thoughtful design elements including optimal bed height for transfers, accessible closet rails, and well-positioned climate controls.
“The adapted bathrooms maintain the hotel’s elegant aesthetic while fully meeting accessibility needs,” Khan noted, emphasizing how the design avoids making guests feel singled out for requiring special accommodations.
Inclusive Dining Experiences
The resort’s restaurants offer advance table reservations and removable seating for wheelchair users, with staff trained to provide appropriate assistance. This attention to detail ensures all guests enjoy Gran Canaria’s renowned culinary offerings comfortably.
Commitment to Continuous Improvement
The audit identified key areas for enhancement, which Lopesan Hotel Group has already incorporated into its accessibility roadmap. Following discussions with General Manager José Alba and Hotel Director Enrique Montes, the company committed to:
- Creating a dedicated accessibility section on lopesan.com
- Improving visibility of adapted rooms in online bookings
- Enhancing wayfinding signage throughout the property
- Ensuring compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
Setting New Standards in Accessible Tourism
The final report concludes: “Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa offers exceptional inclusive features and services, demonstrating strong commitment to implementing our recommendations. Their goal to create a destination where all guests feel recognized, supported, and truly welcome establishes them as a European leader in accessible hospitality.”
