Las Palmas Tourism Chief Sacked for Absenteeism

Tourism Manager Dismissed for Neglect of Duty

The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has dismissed the manager of the municipal tourism company Turismo LPA, Luis Rodríguez Neyra, for failing to attend work and neglecting his duties. The deputy mayor and councillor for the area, Pedro Quevedo (NC), confirmed the news to the EFE news agency.

Disciplinary Process Followed Warnings

In his statement, Quevedo detailed that the dismissal was for disciplinary reasons. He explained that roughly eight months ago, after it became known the manager had personal problems and was not fulfilling his obligations, a formal burofax (a certified legal letter) was sent reminding him of his responsibilities. While a brief improvement was noted, the situation later deteriorated.

In October, during a meeting which also included a member of the company’s board of directors, Rodríguez Neyra was again asked to rectify the situation. However, upon detecting that he was leaving urgent matters unattended—including payroll payments and invoice reviews—the council felt compelled to proceed with his dismissal.

Decision Formally Communicated and Ratified

The tourism councillor reported that he informed the spokespeople for the municipal groups of this decision last Friday and communicated it to the Commission for Organisation, Functioning and General Regime this Tuesday. The dismissal has also been ratified by the Turismo LPA board of administration.

Council Reviews Pending Work and Accounts

Quevedo indicated that the council is currently assessing the backlog of work left by the former manager and acknowledged the extra burden this is placing on staff. He added that the department’s accounts will be reviewed with auditors for clarification, bank movements will be monitored, and appropriate action will be taken if any irregularities are detected.
