Las Palmas Invests €2.9m in Major Road Resurfacing Project

Major Investment in Urban Infrastructure

The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has awarded contracts worth €2,892,325.70 for extensive road resurfacing works in the neighbourhoods of Guanarteme and Alcaravaneras, as well as on Avenida de Escaleritas. The project will cover more than 102,000 square metres across nearly 40 streets, according to a council statement.

The Councillor for Roads, Works and Lighting, Carlos Díaz, explained that these works form part of the municipal Resurfacing Plan, which has seen investments exceed €8 million over the last two years. “With these works we aim to guarantee safer, more accessible and comfortable streets for residents, improving mobility and the conservation of the urban road network,” he stated.

Detailed Breakdown of the Works

The first contract lot corresponds to Phase I in the Guanarteme neighbourhood, covering 20 streets. These include Avenida de El Rincón, Avenida Príncipe de Asturias, Numancia, Párroco Francisco Rodríguez Rodríguez, Castillejos, Vergara, Lepanto, El Salvador, Espartero, Perú, Puerto Rico, Avenida José Mesa y López (between Plaza de las Américas and Calle Costa Rica), Paraguay, Panamá, Portugal, Pelayo, Antonio Medina Vega, Churruca and Salvador Manrique de Lara. This section involves resurfacing 43,551.90 square metres with a budget of €1,212,472.73. The Contracts Board has proposed awarding this lot to the company Lopesan Asfaltos y Construcciones, S.A.U.

The second lot is for the Alcaravaneras neighbourhood, with an investment of €1,149,961.62 to work on 38,890.12 square metres across 16 streets. These are Manuel González Martín, Ingeniero Salinas, Alfredo Calderón, Italia, Blasco Ibáñez, Víctor Hugo, Pi y Margall, Barcelona, Néstor de la Torre, Turina, Bilbao, Concepción Arenal, Mas de Gaminde, Valencia, Alemania and Luis Antúnez. In this case, the proposed award has gone to the company Félix Santiago Melián, S.L.

Finally, the third lot covers the resurfacing of 19,709.31 square metres on Avenida de Escaleritas, specifically the stretch between the Electra roundabout—which provides access to the La Ballena bridge—and Calle Obispo Romo. This work also includes Pepe Castellano and Bejeque streets, the latter located in the Sansofé urbanisation, where two pavement kerb drops will be installed. A budget of €529,891.35 has been allocated for this intervention, which has an estimated duration of two months, and it has been awarded to the company Surhisa Suárez e Hijos, S.L.

Ongoing and Recent Resurfacing Projects

Last year, the council carried out a €2.2 million project across three districts. This involved repaving streets in neighbourhoods of the Ciudad Alta District, such as La Minilla, Escaleritas, Altavista and Barranquillo Don Zoilo; the Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo-Tenoya District, with work in Piletas, Isla Perdida, La Suerte and Cruz del Ovejero; and the Centro District, where main thoroughfares like Paseo de Chil and León y Castillo were resurfaced—the latter near the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, at the connection between Avenida Marítima and the Naval Base.

Currently, the Department of Roads, Works and Lighting is working on Paseo Tomás Morales, where the section between Plaza de La Constitución and Juan XXIII has already been resurfaced. Work is expected to continue shortly on the stretch between Bravo Murillo and Plaza de La Constitución.

Furthermore, through the Island Council’s Cooperation Plan, the city council resurfaced 33 streets in Triana, Vegueta, Escaleritas, Casablanca I and El Lasso in 2024, with an investment of €1.2 million. Two other resurfacing projects were completed in the neighbourhoods of Schamann and Salto del Negro (€508,270) and in Casablanca I and Las Torres (€424,000).
