Lanzarote Council Backs Green Energy with €450,000 Subsidy Package
The Island Council of Lanzarote has given its final approval for a grant scheme aimed at mitigating climate change and driving the energy transition. The subsidies are specifically for renewable energy self-consumption installations on Lanzarote and the smaller island of La Graciosa. The move represents a total investment of €454,236.09, which will be distributed among 157 projects, most of which are for photovoltaic solar and wind power systems.
Strategic Plan to Boost Renewable Production
In a statement, the island’s president, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted that this grant call is part of a strategic energy plan with concrete budgetary resources and objective criteria. The goal is to significantly increase renewable energy production across the islands. He noted that the high volume of applications demonstrates a growing interest in self-consumption and energy efficiency. It also confirms the need for local authorities to continue providing financial support mechanisms to meet this public demand.
Upfront Payments to Accelerate Projects
The council has specified that the final resolution includes provisions for the advance payment of the grants. This measure shortens processing times and ensures that installations can go ahead without delay, a key factor in making sure these policies have a tangible impact on the ground. The original call for applications attracted 205 submissions, with 157 being approved. The remainder were either rejected or withdrawn for failing to meet the established requirements.
