La Palma’s summits frozen in wake of storm
The high peaks of La Palma are frozen in the aftermath of Storm Emilia, with the island’s summit, situated at 2,426 metres above sea level, still covered in a stark white layer this Sunday. In the early hours of 14 December, temperatures around the Roque de Los Muchachos ranged between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius, but during the previous night, the mercury plummeted to -6.1 degrees, according to meteorological data compiled by Apalmet.
Road closures and travel disruption
The LP-4 road providing access to Roque de Los Muchachos, from both the eastern side (Mirca) and the western side (Hoya Grande, Villa de Garafía), remains closed to traffic due to sheets of ice, particularly on the Los Andenes stretch. The interior roads of the Astrophysics Observatory are also closed.
Record rainfall and strong winds
Roque de Los Muchachos was the area of the island that saw the most rainfall on Saturday. Specifically, this location recorded 59.1 litres per square metre, according to Apalmet. This is followed by the Casa Forestal in Villa de Garafía with 50.8 litres. The strongest wind gusts were registered at the airport (95.5 km/h) and in Santa Cruz de La Palma (94.1 km/h).
