La Orotava Council Tenders New 245-Space Car Park Project
The Town Hall of La Orotava has announced the tender for a project to create a new parking zone in the municipality, specifically in the area of La Torrita. The infrastructure will provide 245 parking spaces. With this initiative, the municipal governing group is fulfilling one of its commitments to the residents of the Villa de Arriba, facilitating parking access and helping to relieve traffic pressure around the historic centre.
Project Details and Funding
The project has been commissioned to the public commercial company Gesplan (Gestión y Planeamiento Territorial y Medioambiental) and includes vehicle access from Villalba Hervás and Teobaldo Power streets. A direct pedestrian connection to the Jardín Victoria and the historic centre will also be created, allowing for comfortable and safe walking between these areas. The works will include planting vegetation in the surroundings to aid the infrastructure’s integration into the landscape.
The project, with an estimated construction period of twelve months, will involve an investment of over €2.5 million. Of this amount, one million euros will be contributed by the Government of the Canary Islands, another million by the Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo), and the remainder, over half a million euros, will be covered by La Orotava Town Council. This investment is in addition to the prior acquisition of the plot, which cost the municipal coffers €1,300,000.
Design and Sustainable Mobility Goals
The plot allocated for the project exceeds eight thousand square metres, of which approximately three thousand will be dedicated to parking, distributed across two platforms at different heights. The project aligns with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the municipality’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (Plan de Movilidad Urbana Sostenible – Pemus), which advocates for a historic centre more oriented towards people and less dependent on private vehicles.
In this sense, the new La Torrita car park, located just metres from the historic centre, will allow drivers to leave their cars on the periphery and access the centre on foot. It will also promote the use of low-emission vehicles through the installation of electric charging points. This new facility is part of the municipal strategy to create parking areas close to the historic centre and commercial zone, aiming to improve mobility, accessibility, and quality of life for both residents and visitors to the municipality.
