A Stellar Spectacle in Tenerife
This city in Tenerife can boast of having one of the most beautiful Christmas light displays in all of Spain. With careful, original, and highly elaborate design, the city council has chosen this year to pay homage to the Canarian sky and the constellations visible from the archipelago. Millions of LED lights envelop the streets, transforming them into a scene straight out of a Christmas film—the kind you fancy watching on a quiet Sunday afternoon from the sofa. If you want to feel as if you are strolling under the lights of the Champs-Élysées in Paris or through Piccadilly Circus in London, you don’t need to catch a flight. You simply need to hop on a bus and head to San Cristóbal de La Laguna, where Christmas is experienced with a special brilliance.
An Illuminated Observatory
Six million LED lights and 3,500 decorative elements form La Laguna’s Christmas lighting. This city has always been known for having the best Christmas lights in the Canary Islands, and it also competes to be among the best in the country. ‘The Sky of Canarias’, the theme chosen for this year, pays tribute to the ‘Ley del Cielo’ (Sky Law), which allows astronomers from around the world to observe the wonders visible from the islands. “The lighting turns La Laguna into a veritable Christmas observatory, where history, science, and fantasy intertwine to offer a unique visual experience,” highlight officials from the Laguna council.
The Cathedral of Christmas
Among its main attractions is the always impressive Calle Obispo Rey Redondo, which is once again consecrated as the cathedral of Christmas. Its spectacular lighting evokes the arches of the temple that stands at this very spot, creating a unique visual effect. This year’s decoration has given rise to an ephemeral monument, where strips of lights link pointed arches to form vaults of bluish light that allow glimpses of the island’s true sky. Circular elements representing constellations visible from the Canaries hang from this structure, drawn with lights and accompanied by the name of each one. A proposal that not only beautifies the street but also invites both visitors and residents to learn and look up at the sky.
Festive Squares and Full Programme
If you follow the trail of light from the arches, you will arrive at the Plaza del Adelantado, where food stalls have been installed alongside more luminous elements. The City Council of La Laguna has created the so-called ‘Plaza de la Navidad’ (Christmas Square) in the Plaza del Cristo, in front of the Sanctuary of the Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna. This space becomes a key enclave for holding events and activities during these special dates. The programme will be inaugurated this Friday, 19 December with a concert by Los Sabandeños and will extend until 4 January, offering a wide variety of activities for all ages. The venue will feature open-air cinema, a gastronomic area, a craft market, as well as games and children’s attractions.
Magic for the Little Ones
Furthermore, the city will experience one of the most anticipated moments for children with the Father Christmas parade, which will wind through the streets of the historic centre on 23 December, filling La Laguna with excitement and festive atmosphere. The children of La Laguna can start posting their letters to the Three Wise Men from the very day of the Spanish Christmas Lottery draw. On 22 December, the ‘Campamento Real’ (Royal Camp) will open its doors in the Parque de La Vega, a space designed for the little ones to experience the magic of this season. Tickets can be purchased online for a symbolic price of 1 euro.
The Grand Finale: The Three Kings
The grand finale to the children’s Christmas will come on 5 January with the eagerly awaited Three Kings Parade. Their Majesties will enter the city at 11:30 am, heading to the Town Hall. Subsequently, they will move to the Sanctuary of the Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna, where they will offer the Baby Jesus the gold, frankincense, and myrrh brought from the East. Then in the evening, at 6:30 pm, the parade will begin, travelling through the streets of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and filling them with hope and joy.
