Gran Canaria Approves Mogán Tunnel to Improve Southern Connectivity

Mogán Tunnel Project Approved for Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands Government, through the Directorate General of Road Infrastructure, has given final approval for the construction of the Mogán tunnel. Located at kilometer 44 of the GC-500 highway in Gran Canaria, this project marks a significant step in improving connectivity for the island’s southern region.

A Long-Awaited Solution for Road Safety

Pablo Rodríguez, Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility, emphasized the importance of reactivating this critical infrastructure project. “During my previous term as minister, we recognized the urgent need to address the recurring landslides along the route between Taurito and Playa de Mogán, which have disrupted travel since 2017,” he stated.

Project Details and Benefits

The tunnel will stretch 313 meters, featuring two 3.5-meter lanes for bidirectional traffic, separated by a one-meter striped median. Wider shoulders and improved drainage ditches will enhance visibility and safety along the access routes. Once completed, drivers can expect a 40% reduction in travel time between Taurito and Playa de Mogán, making it a game-changer for both residents and visitors exploring Gran Canaria’s stunning southern coastline.
