Fuerteventura’s Largest Road Project Tenders for €216m Motorway

Historic €216m Motorway Tender Launched for Fuerteventura

The Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General for Road Infrastructure has put out to tender the works for the ‘Airport to Pozo Negro Junction’ section of Fuerteventura’s North-South motorway axis. The base tender budget is set at €215,924,834.

A Landmark Project for the Island

The Canary Islands Government’s Minister for Public Works, Pablo Rodríguez, emphasised that this is the highest-value section of the North-South axis and the largest public road project ever tendered in Fuerteventura’s history. “We are talking about a long-demanded infrastructure that today has all the technical, administrative, and environmental guarantees to take a definitive step forward,” he stated.

The minister explained that the project received technical approval in September 2025 and that the contracting process began last December, following the completion of an especially complex technical and environmental approval process. The incorporation of construction solutions designed to minimise the impact on the landscape has been crucial. These include building the island’s first twin-bore tunnel, conceived to guarantee the protection of natural habitats and sensitive species like the houbara bustard.

Enhanced Connectivity and Sustainable Design

Rodríguez highlighted that the Airport-Pozo Negro section will mean a substantial improvement in connectivity and mobility for Fuerteventura, in addition to generating economic activity and employment on the island. Companies interested in bidding can submit their applications until 5 February at 18:00 Canary Islands time via the State Public Procurement Platform.

The project covers the Airport to Pozo Negro Junction stretch of the Puerto del Rosario-Morro Jable road. It includes building new interchanges that will improve connections with the FV-2, FV-413, and FV-50 roads, facilitating access to the airport, tourist hubs like Caleta de Fuste, and various urban and rural areas in the municipality of Antigua.

Key Engineering Works and Green Energy

Among the principal works is the construction of a tunnel approximately 1.2 kilometres long, with entry and exit portal structures, as well as a 190-metre viaduct over the Barranco de La Torre. The project also includes various structures associated with the interchanges, an overpass, and several underpasses to ensure the continuity of existing tracks and access roads.

Notably, the project incorporates the installation of renewable energy systems using photovoltaic panels. The goal is to cover 100% of the electricity consumption for the new infrastructure’s lighting, including the interchanges and tunnel. In this way, the motorway will be energy neutral and self-sustaining, contributing to decarbonisation and the reduction of atmospheric emissions, explained the Canary Islands Government.
