Major Music Festival Unveils Fuerteventura Programme
The Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra (OFGC), under the baton of Karel Mark Chichon with a Mozart programme, headlines the schedule for the 42nd International Music Festival of Canaries (FIMC) in Fuerteventura, it was announced on Monday. It will be one of six standout concerts offered to the public between 14 January and 7 February, most taking place at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos, as well as the Auditorio de Antigua. Tickets and season passes are now on sale, according to the island council.
A Diverse Musical Line-up
The programme also includes other notable ensembles such as the Il Giardino d’Amore Ensemble, soprano Raquel Lojendio with pianist Chiky Martín, and the young pianist Gabriel Ducatenzeiler. These are complemented by two attractive proposals from the ‘En Paralelo’ (Parallel) section, featuring the latest show from the company Pieles, titled ‘Arahal’, and a concert by Guiguan Project with trumpeter Markus Stockhausen.
Concert Schedule and Highlights
The 42nd FIMC programme in Fuerteventura begins on Wednesday, 14 January with the Guiguan Project ft. Markus Stockhausen concert at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos at 8:30pm. The group consists of three musicians who share a deep desire to develop a unique style, rooted in their island heritage: Javier Infante (guitar), Alexis Lemes (timple) and Javier Colina (double bass). On this occasion, they will perform with the acclaimed German trumpeter and composer Markus Stockhausen, one of the great innovators and improvisers on the European jazz scene.
Under the direction of Karel Mark Chichon, the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra will take centre stage for the next concert on the island. It will be on Friday, 16 January at 8:30pm at the Palacio, where they will present a Mozart programme: the overture to ‘La finta giardiniera’, the Sinfonia Concertante, and Symphony No. 29. These are works from the 1770s, from the period when the genius had to balance his work as a salaried musician in the Salzburg Court with his inexhaustible creativity and output. For the Sinfonia Concertante, they will feature soloists from the orchestra: Sergio Marrero (violin) and Adriana Ilieva (viola).
The company Pieles will present its new show on Monday, 19 January, also on the main stage in the capital at 8:30pm. Titled ‘Arahal. Un lugar donde descansar’ (A Place to Rest), it is an interdisciplinary proposal that inhabits tradition. “Percussion, voice, stone, seed and silences merge into an ancestral song that connects the Canary Islands, North Africa and the Sephardic legacy,” the statement continues.
The young pianist Gabriel Ducatenzeiler will perform on Saturday, 24 January at the Auditorio de Antigua at 8:00pm. This will be an opportunity to discover the versatility and virtuosity of one of the islands’ most promising pianists. Trained in Gran Canaria and Germany, and at just 23 years old, he has already won several prizes and is developing an active career as a concert performer.
Il Giardino d’Amore will make a stop in Fuerteventura on Saturday, 31 January, with a programme journeying through German, Italian and French Baroque music: Vivaldi, Leclair, Rebel, Westhoff, Bach, Tartini, Locke and Purcell. Under the direction of violinist Stefan Plewniak, they will be on the main capital stage at 8:30pm.
The closing concert in Fuerteventura will be on Saturday, 7 February with Canarian soprano Raquel Lojendio, accompanied by Madrid-born pianist Chiky Martín, on the same stage. With a programme titled ‘Cantos de dos mundos’ (Songs from Two Worlds), they invite the audience on a delightful journey across the two shores of the Atlantic. The two performers, regular collaborators, will travel through Spain, Argentina and Brazil via the works of their most prominent composers: from Lorca to Villa-Lobos, via Falla, Halffter, Guastavino, Ginastera, Lorenzo Fernández and Ovalle.
