El Reducto Beach Closed Over Sewage Concerns

Beach Closure in Arrecife

The City Council of Arrecife in Lanzarote has urgently requested that the Water Consortium and its responsible water management company, Canal Gestión, resolve the “anomalies causing new discharges, which appear to be sewage,” in the area of the Submarine Emissary at Punta del Camello. This situation has forced the closure of the popular El Reducto beach.

Official Report Filed

According to a statement released by the council, Arrecife Local Police officers were dispatched to the site and have filed an official report alleging an infringement by those responsible for maintaining this wastewater network. The council has formally communicated this new incident to the Consortium and Canal Gestión Lanzarote, noting that such events are “becoming frequent” in this part of the Arrecife coastline.

Call for Permanent Solutions

Arrecife’s mayor, Yonathan de León, has repeatedly called on the Water Consortium and Canal Gestión to “carry out the necessary work to guarantee that new discharges do not occur again on the city’s coast.” The council also points to a recent report published by the Canary Islands Government on the Territorial Information System, which identifies several stations under the ownership of the Consortium and Canal Gestión that “must be adapted to prevent these spills.”

Precautionary Measures in Place

In response to the confirmation of these new suspected spills, the Department of Beaches and Environment has taken the precautionary measure of closing El Reducto beach. Authorities are strongly advising against swimming in this city cove while awaiting the results of water analyses being conducted by technicians from the Lanzarote Health Department. The safety of residents and visitors remains the top priority until the water quality can be verified.
