A Viral Tenerife Gem: Dining at ‘Casa Mi Madre’ by the Sea
On Tenerife’s north coast, there is a restaurant with a mother’s name and the taste of the sea. Here, fish is fried just right and papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) arrive at the table so tender they practically melt. This is no ordinary eatery: it is Casa Mi Madre, a family-run restaurant clinging to the ocean in San Juan de la Rambla, where every lunch becomes a cherished memory.
Praise from a Foodie Influencer
Food content creator @alegloton made its virtues clear in a viral video: “If you’re in the north of the island and fancy some fish right by the sea, I’m going to show you a place you’ll love.” He wasn’t exaggerating, as from its terrace you can hear the waves breaking. Inside, the cooking is done with the same affection one uses when cooking for their own family. “It’s literally his mother’s house,” explains the creator, and that family essence envelops everything: the service, the decor, the menu.
Fresh Fish and Homely Flavours
Every morning, fresh fish arrives, and the restaurant serves it with simplicity and care, like a Sunday family lunch. “We ordered this almogrote (a spicy cheese paste) that they make themselves, with toasted bread, and that’s always a good start,” he narrates while cutting into the cured goat’s cheese with mojo sauce. Next came homemade chicken croquettes—not fish, to the TikToker’s surprise—and a portion of perfectly crisp, golden fried moray eel.
The Star of the Show
But the star dish is, without doubt, the sama (a type of bream) with papas arrugadas, served butterflied, juicy, and with barely any bones. “The fish just fell apart on its own. What more could you ask for? We picked it completely clean, as it should be,” he comments in his video, between satisfied laughs and close-ups of the white flesh flaking away easily.
Sweet Endings and Practical Details
The meal didn’t end without something sweet, and at Casa Mi Madre the desserts also have a homemade soul. “We ordered a coffee dessert and another one I tried by accident,” he confesses. “It had been a long time since I’d ordered it. And what a success,” he concludes. The restaurant, located at Calle Cantito 16 in San Juan de la Rambla, is open from Thursday to Monday between 13:00 and 16:00. It is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and operates on a reservation basis, which can be made by calling 647 944 009.
