A Welcome Weather Change
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has forecast a shift in the weather across the Canary Islands this Sunday. The most notable change will be felt on Tenerife, where the persistent calima (hazy dust) will recede significantly. This will give way to cloudier skies and a noticeably fresher, cooler atmosphere.
Island-by-Island Forecast
According to AEMET, there is a probability of occasional, light rainfall, particularly on northern slopes and during the later hours of the day. While temperatures will remain relatively stable, a slight drop is expected in several areas. The northeast trade winds will regain strength, with strong gusts forecast for the southeast and extreme northwest slopes, as well as high-altitude regions.
Tenerife
In the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, expect a low of 18°C and a high of 23°C. The north of the island will see more cloud cover with possible drizzle, while the south remains clearer. Light calima will linger in the mountain peaks in the morning but will diminish as the day progresses.
Gran Canaria
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will experience a similar range of 19°C to 23°C. The forecast calls for cloudy intervals, with clearer conditions in the south. Scattered drizzle is possible by the end of the day, and light, high-level calima will recede during the afternoon.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura
In Arrecife, Lanzarote, temperatures will range from 18°C to 22°C under partially cloudy skies. Light calima at higher altitudes will dissipate throughout the day. For Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura, expect 18°C to 22°C, with cloudy conditions in the north bringing possible drizzle and moderate trade winds that will occasionally be strong.
The Western Isles
San Sebastián de La Gomera will see temperatures between 19°C and 24°C, with cloudy intervals that are more compact in the north and east. Light rain is possible during the early morning and late evening. Santa Cruz de La Palma will have a high of 22°C and a low of 19°C, with cloudy northern slopes and occasional, light rain at the end of the day. Valverde in El Hierro will be the coolest, with a forecast of 14°C to 17°C.
Maritime Conditions
At sea, northeasterly winds will dominate, creating a swell and a ground swell of one to two meters. This combination of wind and wave action will result in rough sea conditions for mariners and could make for dramatic coastal views.
