Storm Francis Ushers in a Wet New Year
Tenerife, along with the rest of the Canary Islands, will see in the year 2026 with cloudy skies, showers accompanied by thunderstorms, and moderate to strong or very strong southerly or southwesterly winds. This unsettled weather is due to the Atlantic depression Francis, for which various alerts have been activated. At sea, southwesterly force 7 winds are expected from the early hours off the northwest coasts of La Palma and Gran Canaria and the northeast coast of Tenerife.
Island-by-Island Forecast for New Year’s Day
Tenerife
Initially generally cloudy intervals, more overcast in the south and west, with high cloud across the island. From the morning, skies will become cloudy or overcast with locally heavy or persistent showers expected. These may be accompanied by thunderstorms on south and west-facing slopes and in the far west of the island, with moderate rain not ruled out elsewhere. Minimum temperatures will see little change or a slight rise, while maximums will fall slightly, more noticeably in inland areas. Weak frosts are possible on the central peaks. Winds will be initially moderate southwesterly, strengthening with periods of strong gusts from the morning in high areas, the far west, and southeast coasts, where very strong gusts are possible. These are more likely in the high northwest, central peaks, and far west during the middle of the day. Winds will ease to a moderate westerly by the end of the day. Gran Canaria
Initially generally cloudy intervals, more overcast in the south and west, with high cloud across the island. From the middle of the day, skies will become cloudy or overcast with locally heavy or persistent showers expected, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms on south and west-facing slopes. Moderate precipitation is not ruled out in other areas. Minimum temperatures will see little change or a slight rise, while maximums will fall slightly, more noticeably inland. Winds will be initially moderate southwesterly, strengthening with periods of strong gusts from the morning in high areas and on southeast and northwest slopes, where very strong gusts are possible, most likely in high areas and peaks. La Gomera
Generally cloudy skies. During the morning and middle of the day, locally heavy or persistent showers are expected, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, especially on south and west-facing slopes of the island and in high areas. Minimum temperatures will see little change or a slight rise, and maximums little change or a slight fall. Winds will be initially moderate southwesterly, strengthening with periods of strong gusts from the morning in high areas, west and southeast slopes, where very strong gusts are possible, more likely in high areas during the middle of the day. La Palma
Generally cloudy skies. During the morning, locally heavy or persistent showers are expected, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, especially on southwest-facing slopes of the island and in high areas, as well as on the eastern slope. Minimum temperatures will see little change or a slight rise, and maximums little change or a slight fall. Winds will be initially moderate southwesterly, strengthening with periods of strong gusts from the morning in high areas, the far northwest and southeast, and on the eastern slope, where very strong gusts are likely. El Hierro
Generally cloudy skies. During the morning, locally heavy or persistent showers are expected, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, especially on southwest-facing slopes of the island and in high areas. Minimum temperatures will see little change or a slight rise, and maximums little change or a slight fall. Winds will be initially moderate southwesterly, strengthening with periods of strong gusts from the morning in high areas, the far west and south, where very strong gusts are possible, more likely in high areas during the morning and middle of the day. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote
Intervals of high cloud throughout the day, becoming cloudy or overcast with low cloud from late afternoon when locally heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. Temperatures will see little change or a slight rise. Winds will be initially moderate southerly, veering to moderate southwesterly with periods of strong gusts from the middle of the day, with some very strong gusts possible.
