Multi-Million Euro Investment for Greener Roads
The Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility has authorised a contract worth €2,234,713.24 to the public company TRAGSA (Empresa de Transformación Agraria, S.A.). The project aims to improve energy efficiency across various road infrastructures in the archipelago. This initiative falls under the Green Strategy applied to the region’s roads and involves the complete renewal of lighting systems in several sections and tunnels on six islands.
Boosting Efficiency and Road Safety
The works will be managed by the General Directorate of Road Infrastructure, headed by Rosana Melián. The primary goal is to reduce energy consumption, enhance sustainability, and update installations that currently use older, less efficient technology. The authorised contract covers the replacement of conventional lighting, such as high and low-pressure sodium vapour and mercury vapour lamps, with LED systems.
LED technology is noted for its greater energy efficiency, lower electricity consumption, and longer lifespan. This upgrade not only cuts maintenance and energy costs but also improves lighting quality—a crucial aspect for road safety, particularly in tunnels and urban thoroughfares with high traffic density.
Island-by-Island Breakdown of Works
The projects are based on construction plans previously drafted within the regional government’s strategic planning for more sustainable infrastructure. The works will be carried out on Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Specifically, the upgrades will take place at the following locations:
- Tenerife: The new El Bicho tunnel on the TF-1 motorway.
- Gran Canaria: La Ballena tunnel.
- La Palma: The New Cumbre tunnel (túnel Nuevo de la Cumbre).
- La Gomera: GM-1 road, in the Hermigua town section.
- Lanzarote: The Arrecife–Tahíche section of the LZ-1 and its junction with the LZ-3.
- Fuerteventura: FV-2 road, near the Las Rotondas Shopping Centre.
Deadline and Strategic Alignment
El Hierro is not included in this specific contract, as the regional government is considering the drafting of a project for the Los Roquillos tunnel, which is currently in development. According to the terms of the contract with TRAGSA, all works must be completed by 15 November 2026. The public company will act as an in-house provider for the regional administration to execute the planned tasks.
This significant investment aligns with the energy transition and sustainability policies championed by the Canary Islands regional government, marking a concrete step towards modernising the archipelago’s essential infrastructure.
