A Digital Leap for Canarian Families
The Government of the Canary Islands has launched a new mobile application designed specifically for the archipelago’s large families. Announced this Monday, the app aims to streamline administrative processes, digitize the official family card, and provide swift access to the associated benefits. This initiative marks a significant step in bringing public services directly into the hands of residents.
Simplifying access to benefits
Driven by the Ministry of Social Welfare and funded by European Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (NextGenerationEU) funds, this new tool will allow the nearly 30,000 registered large families in the Canaries to quickly and intuitively access their digital card. Users can download documentation, check official resolutions, and verify their eligibility for discounts on services like public transport, all from their smartphones.
Official endorsement and future features
During the launch event in Gran Canaria, President Fernando Clavijo emphasized that this tool “brings the administration closer to the people and makes life easier for Canarian families.” He was joined by the Minister of Social Welfare, Candelaria Delgado, and the Director General of Children and Families, Sandra Rodríguez, who both highlighted the practical and accessible nature of the app, which is now available for iOS and Android devices.
One of the most useful features to be introduced soon is a card renewal notification. This proactive measure will prevent the card from expiring due to an oversight, which can cause problems when trying to access benefits. Furthermore, work is underway to enable families to apply for the card for the first time directly through the application itself.
Part of a broader modernization plan
This digital tool is part of the Ministry of Social Welfare’s broader modernization and digitization plan, which also includes a digital card for certifying the degree of disability. The overarching goal is to reduce paper use and simplify access to public services for all citizens.
Understanding the large family title
The large family title is more than just an administrative recognition; it is a tool for equity that adapts its protection to different family realities. It encompasses not only families with three or more children but also those with two children under specific circumstances, such as disability or widowhood. The categories are divided into General and Special, with the latter reserved for families with five or more children, or with four if they have limited income, thereby ensuring greater protection for those who need it most.
With this new application, the Government of the Canary Islands takes another step towards the digitization of social services and administrative accessibility. It empowers large families to exercise their rights and enjoy their benefits without complex paperwork or unnecessary delays, making island life that much smoother.
