Canary Islands Face Intense Heatwave This Week

Heatwave Alerts Issued for the Canary Islands

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued new yellow and orange heat warnings for the Canary Islands this week. High temperatures will first impact Gran Canaria on Tuesday before spreading to all islands by Wednesday.

Tuesday’s Heat Warnings

Gran Canaria will be under a yellow alert from 10:00 to 19:00 on Tuesday, particularly affecting mountain peaks and the eastern, southern, and western slopes. Maximum temperatures of 35°C are expected, especially in the Tejeda basin and mid-altitude areas facing south and west.

Fuerteventura also faces a yellow heat warning during the same hours, primarily impacting inland areas of the southern half of the island, where temperatures could reach 35°C.

Wednesday’s Escalating Heat

On Wednesday, temperatures are forecast to rise further in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, prompting orange alerts from 09:00 to 21:00. These islands could see highs of 37°C, particularly in Gran Canaria’s Tejeda basin and southern/western mid-altitude zones, as well as inland areas of southern Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The remaining islands will remain under yellow alerts from 09:00 to 21:00, with maximum temperatures of 35°C expected.
