Canary Islands Heatwave to Break This Weekend

Heatwave finally set to break

The intense heat, with temperatures soaring above 34°C (93°F) and accompanied by abundant calima (Saharan dust), has stubbornly lingered over the Canary Islands but is finally forecast to break this weekend. According to predictions from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), a long-awaited shift in the weather pattern is on the horizon, promising a welcome cooldown and even rainfall across several islands.

A welcome change on the way

José Miguel Viñas, a meteorology expert at Meteored, explains that a trough is expected to descend over the Iberian Peninsula by Sunday or Monday. This weather system will generate atmospheric instability, triggering an abrupt drop in temperatures—which will also be felt across the Canaries—and potentially strong thunderstorms in parts of mainland Spain.

Where to expect rain

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) indicates on its forecast maps that La Palma and, most notably, Tenerife are likely to record precipitation starting Sunday. Some light rain could also reach the north of Gran Canaria as early as Monday, offering respite from the dry conditions.

Significant temperature drop expected

The cooldown will be particularly noticeable. Aemet data shows that in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the maximum temperature will reach 34°C on Saturday before dropping to 30°C on Sunday. A further decrease is expected, with highs of 27°C on Monday and 26°C on Tuesday—marking an eight-degree difference in just three days. Similarly, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the mercury will fall from a high of 30°C on Saturday to a much more comfortable 24°C on both Monday and Tuesday.

End of yellow heat warnings

This pronounced shift confirms that the current heat episode, which prompted yellow-level heat warnings across the entire archipelago, will finally come to an end, offering relief to residents and travelers alike.
