Canary Islands Government Champions AI for Public Service Transformation

Canary Islands Government Embraces AI for Public Service Modernisation

The Canary Islands Government has underscored the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in increasing the efficiency of public services. More than 200 public employees attended in person, with over 400 joining virtually, for the First Congress on Artificial Intelligence applied to Government Management. The event was organised by the Directorate-General for Digital Transformation of Public Services, in collaboration with the Canary Islands Institute of Public Administration (ICAP).

High-Level Backing for Digital Strategy

The Minister of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto, and the Director of ICAP, Pino de León, have firmly backed this initiative. It forms part of the modernisation strategy driven by the regional government. During the opening ceremony, the Deputy Minister for Administrations and Transparency, Antonio Llorens, highlighted the high level of participation, which “demonstrates the growing interest in artificial intelligence within the Administration.”

AI as a Tool to Enhance, Not Replace

Llorens emphasised that AI does not replace people but complements and enhances their work. “It allows us to free up time from repetitive tasks and focus on decisions that require human judgement. Artificial intelligence transforms, it does not replace,” he stated. The deputy minister also insisted on the importance of using AI responsibly, ensuring its application is ethical, secure, and transparent, to maximise benefits for citizens and minimise risks.

Empowering Public Employees in the Digital Transition

For her part, the Director-General for Digital Transformation of Public Services, Guadalupe González Taño, noted that one of the Government’s strategic objectives is for public employees to feel like the protagonists of this digital transformation. “We want them to understand each step of the process, feel supported in this transition, and not be left behind. Training and active participation are essential for AI to fulfil its true potential within the Administration,” she explained.

Expert Insights on Automation and Analytics

Throughout the day, experts in innovation and digitalisation shared experiences and debated the challenges and opportunities AI offers the public sector. Discussions ranged from process automation to advanced analytics for service planning and evaluation. The congress reinforces the Canary Islands Government’s commitment to technological innovation as a lever for a more agile, accessible administration focused on the needs of its citizens.
