Canary Islands Bananas Hit the Gym
Canary Islands bananas are now available in sports center vending machines. In an expansion of a healthy eating initiative, the Association of Organisations of Banana Producers of the Canary Islands (Asprocan), together with the vending company TARECA, has brought its successful school sales program to the gym channel. The partnership aims to offer athletes a “natural and healthy alternative” for consumption during physical activity.
Pilot Project Launches in Valencia
The first phase of this innovative project has begun in the Valencian Community. A total of 28 vending machines have been installed in Fitness Park chain centers in Valencia and Castellón. This national chain boasts over 60 gyms and 180,000 members, providing a significant test market. The initial rollout will serve to evaluate consumer acceptance and product turnover before the initiative is expanded to other sports centers across the country.
A Natural Choice for Athletes
The banana is frequently recommended by trainers and nutritionists for its energy-boosting properties, high potassium content, and contribution to muscle recovery. Its benefits are well-recognized by the athletic community. According to a May 2024 study by the university school UAX Rafa Nadal School of Sport, a remarkable 81.3% of athletes regularly consume bananas before, during, or after exercise.
Overcoming Logistical Challenges
Sergio Cáceres, Marketing Director of Plátano de Canarias, highlighted the importance of this venture, stating, “Athletes demand and appreciate the added value of the product, and having gym chains willing to offer it is key.” Marcos Boscá, Marketing Manager of TARECA, added that “this initiative allows us to bring athletes a natural source of energy at the moment they need it most.” This collaboration has successfully overcome logistical and cost challenges to ensure the fruit arrives fresh and at its optimal ripeness, marking the first experience in Spain to introduce fresh fruit into sports vending machines.
Evaluating Future Expansion
The pilot phase is set to run until the end of the year. The results will then be carefully assessed to plan subsequent phases and a potential nationwide expansion, making natural, healthy snacking more accessible to fitness enthusiasts everywhere.
