Widespread Flight Disruption Across the Archipelago
Canary Islands airports experienced significant disruption on Saturday, with a total of 20 cancellations and four diversions recorded at facilities on El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife Norte, La Palma, and Lanzarote due to adverse weather conditions. According to data provided by the Spanish airport authority, Aena, the cancellations primarily affected inter-island flights, while two of the diversions involved international operations.
El Hierro and La Gomera Bear the Brunt
The airport on El Hierro was the worst hit, suffering 11 cancellations. Of these, five were flights to Tenerife Norte and four were from Tenerife Norte, with two additional cancellations on routes to and from Gran Canaria.
At La Gomera Airport, a flight from Gran Canaria was forced to return to its point of origin, constituting one diversion. Furthermore, seven cancellations occurred there: two from La Gomera to Gran Canaria, one from Gran Canaria, two from Tenerife Norte, and two destined for Tenerife Norte.
International Diversions to Gran Canaria
La Palma Airport reported two cancellations, one from and one to Tenerife Norte. It also saw two international diversions; flights originating in Düsseldorf and Frankfurt were both redirected to Gran Canaria Airport.
Similarly, Lanzarote Airport handled two international diversions to Gran Canaria, with the affected flights having departed from East Midlands and Stuttgart respectively.
